Here we will gradually add ficus species from SouthWest China. Many of the large ficus, especially the strangling fics, are still considered sacred in Xishuangbanna. They are said to house the spirits of the dead and it is prohibited to cut them. Traditionally there have been sacred forests for the spirits and nobody was allowed to hunt or take out plants.
Nowadays these forests have become rare and it is part of development efforts to rekindle the respect of old trees and sacred forests.
We will compile Ficus species descriptions as we come along them and when we have scientific names for them. Where possible, we will collect seeds.
