Alpinia sp. (unidentified species)
This is by far the most spectacular ginger of our area.
The plant grows up to 4 meter tall and its magnificent inflorescence opens
in May. In its natural habitat it lives in high altitude forests above
1000 m in canopy gaps and grassy areas. It can tolerate mild frost.
Large bumble bees are required to pollinate its spacious flowers.
Even our bumble bees are too small for pollination

The King's scepter in our garden
We had to remove the screen from our shade house as the
ginger was growing more than 4 meter tall.
The plants are producing a few seeds this year.

The TianZi Biodiversity Centre is working with German Universities to
design land use systems, which are bound to change paradigms: we promote
rare agro-biodiversity species, manage complexity, and find alternatives
to destructive forms of mono culture.
