Xishuangbanna
Xishuangbanna has been a legendary kingdom in history - it still takes
the visitor by its unequaled blend of nature and culture as 14 different
ethnic minorities inhabit this tropical region of Yunnan.
To Eco-Tourism Xishuangbanna offers a tropical paradise of indigenous
culture and endemic species.
Read more about Xishuangbanna's forests,
biodiversity,
culture,
development, and the environmental
and economic problem of its rubber
plantations.
See more butterflies,
snakes, and lizards.
Here are some impressions:
the lunar moth and the festival loving Dai peoples:
colours prevail.....
... and no wonder the peacock originates from Xishuangbanna...
Xishuangbanna is home of the richest biological and ethnic diversity
in Asia. For millennia people of different origin have established their
base of living in the watersheds of the upper Mekong river. The tropical
climate of Xishuangbanna favors the growing of their crops, the collecting
of numerous forest products, and hunting of abundant wildlife.
This situation, however, has changed markedly during this century. Vast
areas of tropical forest have been replaced by rubber plantations and
most cultural minority villagers are no longer finding enough forests
to practice shifting cultivation and hunting.
In an attempt to save the last remaining areas of forests, nature reserves
were established and many thousands of tourists flock to Xishuangbanna
every year to admire these last treasure houses of nature. To design
and implement modern ways of natural resources management which include
peoples participation, the Governments of China and Germany are jointly
working on new concepts and strategies on how to protect nature and
simultaneously maintain the cultural integrity of the ethnic minorities.
Every cultural minority is rich in specific knowledge about nature depending
on the ecological niche they occupy within the watershed. Some are rice
growing societies of the lowlands such as the "Dai", others are experts
in upland farming like the "Aini", and the best hunters are said to
be the "Lahu". This world of indigenous knowledge is further enriched
by the Akha, Hani, Yi, Yao, Bulang, Jinuo, Miao, Kemu, Wa, Lisu, Bai,
Hui, and Zhuang cultural minority groups.
